Stem cell treatment for lupus

Stem cell treatment for lupus is an experimental approach currently under investigation. Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is an autoimmune disease in which the body’s immune system attacks its own tissues and organs. Stem cell treatment for lupus focuses on using the patient’s own hematopoietic stem cells to attempt to “reset” the immune system and reduce autoimmune activity.

The procedure involves collecting hematopoietic stem cells from the patient’s bone marrow or peripheral blood. The patient is then subjected to high-dose chemotherapy to destroy or greatly suppress their immune system. After this, the collected stem cells are reintroduced into the patient.

The goal is to allow the stem cells to generate a new, more tolerant immune system that is less prone to attacking the patient’s own tissues.
